January was a blur of getting back into the swing of things after the holidays, catching colds, and some truly unwelcome windy weather. But despite the appearance of gales and virus’, we kept ourselves busy and even ventured out a few times for some much needed social interaction. A few weeks ago Chris and I went out to hunt for brunch and ended up at Loudons. I’d heard good things about it before and it definitely lived up to its favourable reputation. The restaurant had an all around tempting menu so, as were unable to decide between sweet and savoury, we opted to share an offering of each. Pulled pork eggs benedict and pancakes with bacon, banana, and maple syrup were admired and devoured. They were both amazing and we will be back again for sure. Ideally as soon as possible. On the way out, we couldn’t resist the cakes at the counter so a slice of carrot cake and a slice of walnut and coffee were stuffed into my purse before we left. After brunch eating and cake buying, we walked to the Castle Terrace farmer’s market to pick up even more goodies. With some Pie Not pies carefully stashed away, we walked through Princes’ street gardens, admiring the castle and relishing the rare appearance of sunshine. We then made a quick stop to pick up some flowers from my favourite vendor on Princes’ street. Later that evening we met up with our friends Pernille and Matt for dinner at Vittorio’s on Leith walk. We followed our scrumptious meal with some cookies and ice cream back at their place, accompanied by wine and gin and tonics. It was a sincerely fantastic evening full of great conversation and many laughs. The weekend after we met up with a gang of old friends at City Café, an American themed diner in the heart of old town. There were nearly a dozen of us there, all catching up over pancakes and bacon and a million cups of coffee. While I was doing my masters last year I was fortunate enough to meet a seriously wonderful group of people and I’m incredibly happy that we all decided to stick around Edinburgh for a wee bit longer. After a proper hours long catch up, we left the very patient waiters at the café and freed up the two tables we’d been selfishly appropriating. Not wanting to end the day just yet, a few of us made our way to the City Arts Centre, a gallery that had been on Chris and my to do list since September. The centre was really great and although I wouldn’t say I was the biggest fan of the current collection, the space was stunning and it’s well worth a visit. Not to mention the fact that the company was wonderful and we had a fantastic time pretending to know something about art as we pursued the gallery with friends. January certainly flew by and while we didn’t get out exploring as much as we may have wanted, with the visit of Chris’ family coming up this week, February is sure to be chock full of Edinburgh adventures.

I just love your narratives about the city and your friends. Such great stories.
